Ways We’ve Been Staying Busy at Home

By: Kristen Darkow

Wherever you are in the world, you’ve likely been spending significantly more time in your home over the past few weeks. This virus has brought a lot of change to our world, and because of it, we’re all having to find new ways to entertain ourselves that don’t involve going places or seeing people. Today I’m sharing just a few of the ways that we’ve been keeping busy and entertained over here. 🙂

  1. Reading
I’ve been doing quite a bit more reading than usual, which is nice! I love to read, but I sometimes feel guilty designating that time for myself when I know I could be out doing something else. In the past couple of months, I have read Before We Were Yours and Pieces of Her. Now I’m starting Where the Crawdads Sing, which I know was all the rage last year so I’m really excited to see what all the hype is about! I do plan on doing a book review soon on all of my recent reads. 🙂
  2. Watching Movies
Andrew and I are usually big fans of a movie night anyway, but since being at home more, we’ve turned most nights into a movie night. Some of our recent favorites are Dark Waters, 1917, Spotlight, The Hurt Locker, and Wind River. We usually have a hard time deciding which one to watch each night, so I downloaded an app that helps us pick one. We’ve got a whole list in there of the movies we’ll be watching for the next few weeks! Let us know if there are any good movies we should add to our list. 🙂
  3. Working Out
I usually try to do some form of a workout every day, but with more time at home, I’ve felt even more motivated. The Peloton app has been my absolute favorite these days – they’re doing a 90 day free trial during all of this, so I’ve had access to thousands of workouts for free! You definitely don’t need a Peloton bike to do them – they’ve got strength workouts, cardio workouts, yoga, stretching, etc. I’ve enjoyed the app so much, I’ll probably pay the subscription once the free trial is up! Amazing campaign on their part. 😉 Give it a try – you’ll love it!Here’s the menu – see? So many workouts! Below is my username – if you download the app, we can be friends and do workouts together!
  4. Spending Time Outside
As is true of any Wisconsin spring, the weather has been really hit or miss lately. But on the nicer days, we’ve been spending as much time as possible outside! Storm doesn’t let us miss his daily walks, but in addition, we’ve been enjoying hikes at State Parks, eating our meals on the deck, and playing Badminton with this new Badminton set I ordered off of Amazon! We’re excited to get some more use out of it as the weather continues to get nicer!

  5. Chatting With Family & Friends
If there’s any positive that’s come from all of this, I will say that I think it’s caused me to keep in touch better with family and friends! Everybody is using a video chat platform of some sort, so it’s made it easy to “see” each other and catch up! I had a virtual happy hour with a group of my high school friends, and both mine and Andrew’s families have been taking advantage of the Houseparty app, which allows you to play games like Pictionary, Apples to Apples, Heads Up, and Trivia!

I’d say those are the 5 main things we’ve been busy with around here! These are crazy times and something that none of us could have ever imagined experiencing, but I do think it’s important to see the positives in this. Our culture has gotten so caught up in being on the go all the time, that I think it’s good for us to just slow down a bit and appreciate what’s really important in our lives. How have you been keeping busy? Share with us in the comments below!

  1. We’ve been doing a lot of the same things you’ve been doing… except that since we’ve had over a foot of snow in the past 3 days, Harvey’s walks have been curtailed (he has pretty low clearance)! We’ve both been reading a lot and catching up on movies we missed when they were in theaters.
