Gettin’ Crafty: Birthday Banners Edition

By: Kristen Finstad

Happy Tuesday! Today, we’re talking crafts. My sweet grandpa is turning 90 this month, and we’re throwing him a party to celebrate (ya only turn 90 once, right?). I’ve, of course, asked Amanda to make one of her awesome birthday boards, which you may be hearing more about later this week. ๐Ÿ™‚ But, in addition, I wanted to go all-out with decorations, including a homemade birthday banner!
Here is the photo I used for inspiration:

So, this of course prompted a trip to Hobby Lobby. And Hobby Lobby has everything. After taking a couple laps around the store gawking at all the ornaments, trees, pillows and candles, I ended up finding a few perfect things for my grandpa’s party.

I found a “90” cake topper, “90” balloons, some hanging fans, and some gold and black streamers. And, of course, the supplies for my craft: the birthday banner! I grabbed a big book of gold and black scrapbook paper, some super glue, and some twine. I still had the black letter stickers at home, leftover from my Halloween luminaries.

Now, I realized after I was done with the birthday banner that I had forgotten to take pictures of the process (I just got too excited!). So I’ll do my best to explain the process.

First, I cut out a large diamond shape from a piece of scrapbook paper, and folded it in half so that it created a triangle shape. I used that first diamond shape as a template to create the rest, so that they were all the exact same shape and size. Once I had enough, I folded each one into the triangle shape, and strung a piece of twine between each piece. I then put some super glue onto the paper at the top and at the bottom, and pressed each diamond closed into a triangle. Then it was time to stick the letters on each triangle to create the finished product!

Not too shabby, right? ๐Ÿ™‚ It was super simple and really fun to make, and you could make them for any occasion! “Happy Thanksgiving”, “Merry Christmas”, “Happy New Year”…you get the idea! Who will be trying this craft for the upcoming holidays? Let us know in the comments!
